• Presence of fever suggest serious disease like infection in the biliary tree.
• Presence of jaundice is suggestive of obstruction of biliary tree.
• Severe pain on left side of abdomen or back suggest pancreatitis - most dreaded complication of gallstone disease. .

The main causes of gallstone disease are:

• Excess cholesterol in bile
• Too much bilirubin
• Poor bile emptying
• High-fat or high calorie diet
• Obesity and metabolic factors
• Hormonal factors - Women, especially those pregnant, on hormone therapy, or using oral contraceptives, have a higher risk due to estrogen’s effect on bile cholesterol.
• Genetics and family history - A family tendency may predispose to gallstones.
