A revolution happened in gastroenterology 50 years ago due to invention of flexible endoscope.
For the first time gastroenterologist had an opportunity to visualise the digestive tract live and
make a diagnosis with very high accuracy. Subsequent developments resulted in invention of videoscopes with
its digital advantage and allowed treatment of many diseases of digestive tract without any surgical intervention,
hospitalisation, minimum morbidity and mortality and a cheaper option of treatment.
It allows early diagnosis of cancer and its endoscopic treatment without need for surgery.
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a flexible, lighted tube (endoscope) to visualize the inside of the body, primarily for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal (GI) conditions.
It allows doctors to directly examine the lining of the digestive tract, perform biopsies. and even treat certain conditions during the procedure.
Endoscopy for Diagnosis
An endoscopy can be used to investigate unusual symptoms. Diagnose conditions that can cause acidity, bleeding, diarrhea, inflammation, , difficulty in swallowing which can be symptom of some serious diseases.
Endoscopy for Surgery
Endoscopy is performed to help to perform certain types of surgery For example, doctors can stop internal bleeding, seal wounds, open blockages, remove tissue, remove swallowed objects, clip polyps, or widen a narrowed esophagus.
Endoscopy To Remove Small Sample
Endoscopy is done to remove a small sample for further analysis like biopsy.
An upper GI endoscopy is typically done to investigate and potentially treat issues in the upper digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, and duodenum). .
Colonoscopy is performed for screening for colorectal cancer and polyps, investigating gastrointestinal bleeding or changes in bowel habits, and evaluating abdominal pain or unexplained weight loss. It's also used to treat certain issues like polyp removal or stopping bleeding
ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is typically done to diagnose and treat problems with the bile and pancreatic ducts. It's used when there are blockages, narrowing, or leaking in these ducts, as well as in cases of gallstones, infection, or tumors. It's also used to find the cause of unexplained abdominal pain or jaundice.
Enteroscopy is performed when a healthcare provider suspects issues in the small intestine, such as unexplained bleeding, chronic diarrhea, or the need to evaluate inflammatory bowel diseases or tumors. It can also be used to diagnose and treat conditions like small bowel obstruction, foreign object removal, and vascular abnormalities
Capsule endoscopy is typically done to visualize the small intestine, particularly when other diagnostic methods like colonoscopy or upper endoscopy are not sufficient. It's often used to investigate unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, diagnose or evaluate inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn's disease, and screen for conditions like celiac disease or polyposis syndromes.
A FibroScan test is a non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound technology to assess liver stiffness, which can indicate the presence and severity of fibrosis (scarring) in the liver. It's often used as an alternative to a liver biopsy for diagnosing and monitoring liver diseases.
