NAFLD is a condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol.
It is strongly associated with obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome.
Fatty liver is one of the most common diagnosis of liver made on sonography.
People tend to develop fatty liver if they have certain other conditions such as obesity,
diabetes or high triglycerides. Now a days it is seen in younger age group due to unhealthy
and sedentary lifestyle, junk food, lack of exercise etc. resulting in obesity hence NAFLD.
NAFLD is the general term for fat in the liver without alcohol use. A more severe form, called Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), occurs when the fat causes liver inflammation and damage, which can progress to cirrhosis.
Most patients with NAFLD do not have obvious symptoms. Some may feel tired, experience discomfort in the right upper abdomen, or only come to know after an ultrasound or abnormal liver tests.
Diagnosis is usually made with ultrasound, liver function tests, FibroScan, and sometimes blood tests to rule out other causes. In select cases, a liver biopsy may be needed.
There is no specific medicine approved for NAFLD yet. Treatment focuses on lifestyle modification, weight loss, healthy diet, regular exercise, controlling diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Dr. Jayant Barve creates a tailored plan for each patient to prevent disease progression.
